Found a dried up fruit in the community garden. broke it and found germinated seedlings inside! Almost dried up. I put the seedlings with the husk into a small pot and wrapped the pot with a reused shopping bag. Passion fruits seedlings in a dried fruit husk. Passion fruits seedlings, about 2 months old. 

I used a professional germination tray to sow 20 lots of coriander. Let's see how it turn out in a few weeks. seeds bought in Batu Pahat, Johor. Germination date: 18 Dec 2017. The tray is then wrapped with a plastic shopping bag to seal to moisture and keep warm.  The first 2 rows from the left are coriander. The next 4 row are 小白菜, there rest are chinese mustard leaf.  Germinated Chinese mustard and 小白菜after 2 days. Celery may germinate in a week.  小白菜and Chinese mustard at day 10. Low Watt LEDs vs T5 Grow Lights: Seed Starting / Lettuce Test T5 Grow Light ( fluorescent) is the winner over LED Red and Blue and LED Blue lights in growing Butterhead Lettuce experiment (watch the video above). In this experiment, the T5 light power is 96 Watt, while the LED lights are of lower wattage. The initial investment calculated based on the per square in cost. T5 cost is $0.29; LED cost $0.25 - hence that leveled the ground of comparison for the initial cost.  In conclusion, the higher the output of the lights based on same (similar) initial cost per square inch, the better the yield of the produce. Simple mathematics! 

This plot of land consists of many farms worked by family farmers who ' adopt' or rent them .  My daughters and I were greeted by friendly farmers who were harvesting some Traditional Chinese herbs.  A plot like this costs around $400 a month, according to a farmer who got it second hand. On top of that, farmers have to pay their own monthly water and electricity bills.  Some even grow vegetables by hydroponics, creatively making use of PVC pipes. And some ingeniously grow water lettuce in their water tanks! Our experience there was a delightful one, as it is really a beautiful place for tourists and locals alike to visit and learn more about the horticulture scene in Singapore 😀 There are also gardening shops nearby (Hua Hng Trading) to check out for supplies! Between block 718 and 720 at Admiralty, there lies a quiet and charming community garden frequently visited by residents around that area as well as from afar. A large shade with a round table and chair at the entrance of the garden provides a perfect place for visitors to rest. This is a place where students from primary and secondary schools learn how to sow seeds, transplants seedlings, weed and harvest the produce from the garden. These organic produce (no chemical fertilizers nor insecticides) also benefit the community at large! A recent batch of kailan have just been harvested and were given to a nursing home. We hope that these fresh produce would make up a nutritious meal for the elderly at the home! Gardening starts from young! There are some birds in a large-size cage and some tortoises in the ponds as well. These are definitely going to attract the attention of young visitors. I love to see plants grow. It gives me hope. It helps me to experience life from a different perspective: patience. In my small garden outside my flat, I have mints, aloe vera, air plants, mulberry, red pandan leaves, cacti and orchids. I make use of the space around our refuse disposal chute and beatify it as a 'garden' and share my joy and love for plants with my neighbours. This has often became our conversation starters!
