Gardener's Day Out

Today we visited Hort Park for its Gardeners Day Out. Gardeners Day Out is conducted every 3rd Saturday of the month. They sell gardening things and conduct gardening workshops as well as garden tours. They also have a hort clinic where you can consult NParks about your plants. And the best thing is that they are free! (Unless you buy things)

They sold lots of stuff ranging from succulents to indoor plants to hydrponics to seeds. NParks also sold butterfly attacting, bird attracting and pollinating plants at affordable prices. We bought a refreshing smelling cologne mint plant for $8 and coconut juice as well as some apricots to munch on. Too bad we did not have the chance to attend the workshops!

Other than that, we visted the different themed gardens in Hort Park. They include the kitchen garden, Balinese garden, edible garden, butterfly garden, native garden, and therapeutic garden.

Therapeutic gardening is the practice of using plants and horticulture to improve the well being of users. It was designed based on horticultural practices of Biophilia Hypothesis, Attention Restoration Theory and Stress Reduction Theory. Applying these theories, everyone has an innate emotional affiliation to nature and other living things. This will restore rest and health and relieve stress. The therapeutic garden is mainly for seniors and they can conduct activities such as leaf pressing, scent bag making there when Hort Park has its workshops as there are tables and benches there.

It was jointly set up with NUS and the Alzheimers Disease Association.
A variety of plants such as basil, mother in laws tongue, ang teck hyuk, aloe vera, tarragon and flowers are planted by nursing homes.

The edible garden included plants such as spinach, sweet potato leaves, luffa, lady's finger, butterfly pea, marigolds and more.

The kitchen garden included plants such as basil, mint, tarragon, kale, lettuce, parsely and more.

After which, we went to walk on the treetop forest trail nearby. It was a harrowing experience for people scared of heights like me. But overall, it is a wonderful place to bring children and your family to!
