Therapeutic gardens

Image
There are 2 therapeutic gardens in Singapore. One is in Hort Park, while the other is in Bishan AMK park. T herapeutic Gardens are outdoor gardens designed to meet the physical, psychological and social needs of park users, incorporating   design principles derived from scientific evidence . Together with   therapeutic horticulture programmes  such as leaf pressing and gardening, visitors can experience a range of health benefits such as the relief of mental fatigue, reduced stress and an overall improvement to emotional well-being. These gardens help people with dementia and those with special needs. They improve memory, motor skills, and create happy hormones, among of the many benefits. I can't wait to visit these therapeutic gardens and see how it helps us! It also improves mental health as we re-connect to mother nature.  Bishan AMK park  Hort Park You can read up more at: https://www.nparks.gov.sg/-/media/nparks-real-content/gardens-parks-and-nature/therapeutic-

Volunteering at Edible Garden City (Jln Penjara)

Image
Today I visited Citizen Farm again and volunteered there! We (5 vounteers) removed some mould, topped up compost and sprayed them with anti-fungi solution. It was a meaningful 2 hours there.  Some new plants that I saw were Lemon Balm, Red Vein Sorrel, Okinawa Spinach, Marigolds, and Spearmint. It was also interesting to know that the suscriptors support local farmers and champion local food.   Basil  Marigolds  Okinawa Spinach  Lavender  Rooster  Basil Stacked towers All in all, it was a good 2 hours!

Edible Garden City tour

Image
Today I visited Edible Garden City's Citizen Farm at Jalan Penjara, Queenstown with Evergreen students. It was truly an eye-opening experience.  Firstly, we were introduced to Edible Garden City and its mission, lecture style. Then we proceeded to have a tour around the place, to see what we could bring back to the Evergreen garden.  Citizen Farm I was impressed by the model in which Citizen Farm runs by.  The world faces food supply challenges and social challenges (disabilities, ageing, disruptive technologies that displace millions of jobs). Thus it is crucial that organisations such as this try to bridge the gap and form a platform for food sustainability and social welfare. The Penjara model disrupts the food system by lessening carbon footprint by lessening the travelling miles, cutting the middle man to make food more affordable and fresher, and basing their values on transparency. It consists of a community of farmers with the same values, employs marginalized  com

Farmer's Market at Spectra

Image
Today I went to the Farmer's Market at Spectra (Woodlands). They sold a variety of produce such as local Chye Sim, Sweet potatoes, Corn and Japanese Kai Lan.  They were very welcoming (I was offered a mildly sweet Rosella drink from their garden) and one of the students was my guide. She showed me around the plots of vegetables and plants, explaining to me its uses and characteristics.  I was fascinated by the Snake Gourd, which was super long and the Melons which were huge too. They also have a self irrigation system and a rainwater collecting system. They use leftover leaves and stem for compost and fertilizer. Maybe we would try that for our garden! They have a variety of climbing plants such as Bitter Gourd, Passion Fruit and Melon. They also have Cherry Tomatoes, Pandan, Sugarcane, Kale, Long Beans, Tapioca and many other edible plants.   Cucumber   Long Beans  Melon Passion Fruit Bitter Gourd   Tomatoes Snake Gourd  Corn Sweet Potato- s

Blk 728 Woodlands Garden

Image
On 12 May, Dad and I went to visit the community garden at 728, Woodlands. It is listed as one of the Community in Bloom gardens, which is an accolade by NParks. It has various types of plants (most of them edible), with trellises outside with passion fruit as its green ceiling. It also has plots of land inside with veggies growing. Its a great place for families to explore, learn, volunteer and possibly harvest!  Passion fruit Banana Papaya Sweet Potato leaf Spinach Kai Lan Chye Sim Lady's finger
