Farmer's Sprout Market 2018

Image
Today we went to Suntec Convention Centre hall 406 to look at the Farmer's Sprout Market, and boy, was it crowded! Didn't expect so many people to be there! Seems like the farming community is gaining some traction in Singapore and that's good!  I interviewed some people and got to know more about their organisations. They're really cool people with really cool, good and green ideas which are sustainable for Singapore.  One interesting organisation was VertiVeggies, a hydroponic vertical gardening company. They are looking to grow veggies using hydroponics and then sell it to the market. Their veggie prices are not that much different than Malaysian veggies due to the little transportation costs. Did you know that hydroponics uses less water than normal farming? Also, they are working with a few partners, for example Apex Harmony lodge, a nursing home with elderly with dementia to involve them in plant propogation. They also include people with disabilities and spec...

Gardener's Day Out

Image
Today we visited Hort Park for its Gardeners Day Out. Gardeners Day Out is conducted every 3rd Saturday of the month. They sell gardening things and conduct gardening workshops as well as garden tours. They also have a hort clinic where you can consult NParks about your plants. And the best thing is that they are free! (Unless you buy things) They sold lots of stuff ranging from succulents to indoor plants to hydrponics to seeds. NParks also sold butterfly attacting, bird attracting and pollinating plants at affordable prices. We bought a refreshing smelling cologne mint plant for $8 and coconut juice as well as some apricots to munch on. Too bad we did not have the chance to attend the workshops! Other than that, we visted the different themed gardens in Hort Park. They include the kitchen garden, Balinese garden, edible garden, butterfly garden, native garden, and therapeutic garden. Therapeutic gardening is the practice of using plants and horticulture to impr...

Therapeutic gardens

Image
There are 2 therapeutic gardens in Singapore. One is in Hort Park, while the other is in Bishan AMK park. T herapeutic Gardens are outdoor gardens designed to meet the physical, psychological and social needs of park users, incorporating   design principles derived from scientific evidence . Together with   therapeutic horticulture programmes  such as leaf pressing and gardening, visitors can experience a range of health benefits such as the relief of mental fatigue, reduced stress and an overall improvement to emotional well-being. These gardens help people with dementia and those with special needs. They improve memory, motor skills, and create happy hormones, among of the many benefits. I can't wait to visit these therapeutic gardens and see how it helps us! It also improves mental health as we re-connect to mother nature.  Bishan AMK park  Hort Park You can read up more at: https://www.nparks.gov.sg/-/media/nparks-real-content/gardens-park...

Volunteering at Edible Garden City (Jln Penjara)

Image
Today I visited Citizen Farm again and volunteered there! We (5 vounteers) removed some mould, topped up compost and sprayed them with anti-fungi solution. It was a meaningful 2 hours there.  Some new plants that I saw were Lemon Balm, Red Vein Sorrel, Okinawa Spinach, Marigolds, and Spearmint. It was also interesting to know that the suscriptors support local farmers and champion local food.   Basil  Marigolds  Okinawa Spinach  Lavender  Rooster  Basil Stacked towers All in all, it was a good 2 hours!
